My Review of the Makita mac700 Air Compressor

A portable air compressor is a fairly serious purchase and I decided to do some investigating before replacing my old compressor.  I knew I wanted the best air compressor I could find that would meet my needs and still be affordable.

I took some time before making the purchase and I’m glad I did.  There are a lot of different air compressors on the market that can do many different things.

My needs are pretty common for the home handyman and that’s why I’m sharing my results.  I did some pretty detailed and extensive research into portable air compressors and I finally landed on the Makita mac700 air compressor.

Advantages of Using Air Tools With a Portable Air Compressor

1.     There is great value and the dollar cost is lower than power tools that are corded or cordless.  They have a longer life because they don’t have a motor that will eventually burn out.  The power for the air tool comes from the motor of the air compressor.

2.    Weight is an advantage of air tools as they are lighter since they don’t have a motor.  This lighter weight increases efficiency since it’s simpler to handle.

3.    Air or pneumatic tools receive their power from the air compressor and thus deliver more torque and higher RPM’s than electric powered tools.  This enables the do it yourselfer to complete his project faster and more effectively.

4.    Thanks to the air compressor you can change from one tool to another quite easily.  Oh and besides its uses for different tools, the compressor is perfect for inflating household items.

5.    No electric cords that get in the way or aren’t long enough to reach the job to worry about.  You also don’t have to deal with extension cords.

What to Look for When Buying an Air Compressor

•    Noise Level
•    Amount of amps the compressor draws
•    Lubrication
•    Warranty

Don’t assume that the highest priced air compressor is the best.  It may not be and probably isn’t what you’re looking for unless you’re going to be doing heavy industrial work.  Instead choose the compressor that best meets your needs and that others have rated highly.


Air compressors produce different levels of air flow.  Most power tools require 90PSI to work efficiently.  It’s important that you find a portable air compressor that has enough air flow for your tools and the project.

The Makita mac700 has a cast iron pump with a big bore cylinder and piston.  The cast iron construction is engineered for increased durability.  Big bore cylinder and piston means it has greater bore and stroke for increased compression, faster recovery and less noise.

Less Noise is a Good Thing

We’ve all heard the deafening sound an air compressor can make.  The Makita mac700 has much  lower noise levels with a large 1,720 – RPM pump.  This pump allows for greater displacement at lower RPM.

This basically translates to an efficient pump that allows for more power at lower RMP’s which means a lower noise level and wear and tear on the motor.  When reading customer reviews for this product I noticed that the low noise output was mentioned often.


12.4 amps is how much the Makita draws and this is very low.  This means that you’re much less likely to have a tripped breaker switch.  Also when the breaker is tripped, this results in a voltage drop which can cause extra wear on a motor and shorten motor life.  With the Makita mac700 this shouldn’t be an issue.

Oil Lubricated

The compressors that are oil lubricated tend to run smoother and have a longer life.  The Makita is oil lubricated and has an oil sight glass which makes it easy to see oil levels and maintenance is simple.


If you are not satisfied with any Makita tool within 30 days of purchase, return it and Makita will provide a replacement or refund. Each Makita tool is warranted to be free of defects from workmanship and materials for the period of ONE YEAR from the date of original purchase.

Should any trouble develop during this one-year period, return the COMPLETE tool, freight prepaid, to one of Makita’s Factory or Authorized Service Centers.  Basically the Makita compressor has a 1 year manufacturers warranty.

The 2 Gallon Air Compressor: Perfect for Home Use

The most popular air compressor on the market today for home use is undoubtedly the 2 gallon air compressor.  These compressors are small, portable and light but still pack a great deal of pressure generating power.

These portable air compressors are small but still large enough to run many air tools.  When I was searching for a new home compressor, I wanted one that could do a heck of a lot more than blow up a flat tire or my neighbors inflatable raft.

The definition of a 2 gallon air compressor is that it has a 2 gallon tank.  The tank stores compressed air  and this storage capacity allows the motor to rest until more air is needed.  This extends the motor’s life and makes the air coming from the compressor flow steadily into whatever tool you may be using.

There are oil lubricated or oil free compressors available but I’d strongly recommend the oil lubricated models.  They generally are more powerful and the motor will last longer if maintained correctly.

The 2 gallon air compressor is larger than the mini compressors and therefore can power many more tools and applications.  The 6 gallon compressors are overkill for most of us that aren’t needing industrial use.

The difference in cost can be pretty substantial also.  The 2 gallon compressor I recently bought was less than $200.

The compressor I settled on is powerful enough for the projects I do at home and portable enough to throw in the back of the pickup.  I did quite a bit of research before buying and my air compressor meets all my needs.

It’s very quiet which is important if you have neighbors.  It’s also light and runs any of the air tools I commonly use in completing my do it yourself projects.

My Search for a Quiet Air Compressor

When I was looking for a new compressor, one of my requirements was to find a quiet air compressor.  Most of us have experienced what it’s like to be exposed to the roar of the normal air compressor and it made my ears ring.

My old compressor was a jewel but I have to say it was loud!  I was totally prepared to pay extra for a compressor that not only fit my needs but hummed instead of imitated a 747 jet.  I knew the neighbors would appreciate it and I’d feel less inhibited about running it for my various projects.

There are a number of factors that affect the noise level of an air compressor.  The size of the compressor is a definite cause of noise.  A small air compressor will have a smaller power unit and this will tend to result in a much quieter operating level.

Most home compressors run on electric power and of course this makes for quiet operation.  In the field of silent or quiet air compressors, the most common type is the piston compressor.  These compressors feature technology that isn’t new by any means but they produce much less noise.

There are air compressors that are designed with the objective of being a very quiet air compressor.  They usually feature technology that insulates, dampens or resists vibration as the compressor runs.  There is no compressor that I’m aware of that is totally silent but by combining some of these technologies they certainly lessen the decibel level of older air compressors.

The Makita MAC700 which I recently bought and highly recommend has an oil-lubricated pump and is equipped with a large automotive style filter for increased air intake and greater efficiency. The Big Bore oil-lubricated pump is also more efficient: the MAC700 runs cooler and at half the RPM’s of most competitive units, resulting in greater motor and pump life and lower noise.

Air Compressor Maintenance- 6 Tips

Maintaining an air compressor really isn’t that different from maintaining any motorized tool.  It’s important to know what does need to be changed or replaced  so that your air compressor can give you many years of service.

  • Read the owners manual.  This is an obvious rule but you’ll learn something about your compressor and how to keep it running smoothly.  You’ll also want to study the manual to learn what you must do to keep the warranty current and in force.
  • Make sure the vents are open and clean.  You don’t want to put too much of a load on your compressor and making sure that it breathes easily is extremely important.  This is an easy bit of maintenance but will save wear and tear on the working parts.
  • Replace the air filter.  The air filter must be replaced after a certain number of hours(see your owner’s manual).  Like clogged vents, a dirty air filter will cause the working parts of your air compressor to break down much sooner than is normal.
  • The oil has to be changed regularly.  Changing the oil in your compressor is just as important as with your car or lawn mower engines.  Usually every 500 hours of use is a good rule of thumb.
  • Keep the nuts, bolts and screws tightened upAir compressors by their very nature vibrate quite a bit.  This vibration will cause a loosening up of your nuts and bolts.  Check them regularly.
  • Drain water from the tank.  As you run your air compressor, moisture builds up from the compressing of air and it will accumulate in your tank.  Open the drain valve and drain this moisture once you’ve released the air in the tank.  It only takes minutes and it will improve the efficiency of your motor.

The best air compressors can run for many years if maintained correctly.   Air compressor maintenance doesn’t take long but doing it will provide you with many long and smooth years of service.

What Size Air Compressor?

Air ToolsWhen going through the process of buying an air compressor, there are considerations you need to make.  One of the most important is deciding on the size you need.

Air tools could include pressure cleaners, wrenches, nail guns, paint sprayers or many other types of tools.  Once you determine what tools you’ll be using, it will make your air tool choice easier.

CFM is an important rating to know when shopping.  CFM is cubic feet per minute of output and you need to know how much a tool requires.  When you know the CFM of a certain tool, then you’ll know the power you’ll need from an air compressor to run that tool.

Mini Air Compressors-  Most of the mini air compressors are used for small tools such as a glue gun and also are useful for inflating sports balls, tires, mattresses, etc.  These compressors usually don’t have a tank and run the entire time you’re using them.

Single Stage Compressor-  The single stage compressor usually has a rating of 150 psi(pounds per square inch of pressure) and is commonly used by the average do it yourself project person.

Two Stage Compressor-  These compressors will supply a great deal of power to run most air tools that you’d ever be using on a project.  They have 2 pistons which are necessary to store compressed air in the storage tank.

Another consideration is what type of power you’ll be using for your compressor.  For most home jobs, an electric outlet is fine.  If you’re going to be using your compressor away from home, gas might be a better powering choice.

Some compressors are oil free but my experience is these tend to wear our faster.  The oil lubricated compressors have a longer life but maintenance is required such as making sure the oil level is correct and that the oil is changed regularly.

You may be thinking about purchasing an air compressor.  If you are, there are a few good things to know so that you can choose the best air compressor for your needs.

You need to know how much air pressure you will be using.  Air pressure is measured in PSI or pounds per square inch.  If you’re trying to fill a flat tire, you’ll need a different PSI than you’ll use to run a paint sprayer.

CFM is the rate at which air will move into whatever you’re filling or tool that you may be running.  A high CFM could blow a tire before you could turn the air flow off.

How many tools are you thinking about running off of your compressor.  The best air compressors can run many tools at the same time but it’s possible you don’t really need that feature.  Decide what tools you will use and make sure that the air compressor you choose is the right one and can handle the power requirement.

Did you know that after many hours of use your air tools will leak a little air?  This will of course affect the efficiency of the tool so you might need a little higher air pressure requirement to run the tool at its best.

Another important consideration is the noise level.  A quiet air compressor will keep your ears from ringing after doing a job and also make the wife and neighbors happier too.  It’s a really good idea to know how insulated the air compressor you’re thinking about buying is.

The Portable Air Compressor- A Do It Yourself Necessity

If you’re a do-it-yourself guy like I am, a portable air compressor is a definite necessity.  When I first started doing projects, most of the tools I bought were cordless or corded pneumatic tools.

Many years ago I bought my first small compressor and one of the first projects I did using it was building a new gate.  I used a nail gun connected to the compressor and I was sold.  When it was time for the holidays or birthdays came around, my wife didn’t have a problem in choosing a gift.  Air tools was what I wanted.

I soon realized that making the job easier wasn’t the only plus of using air tools.  After buying my first portable air compressor(which didn’t break the bank by the way), I found that I was saving money.

Air powered tools are generally much less expensive than corded or cordless tools.  They don’t have a motor and contain less working parts.

These pneumatic tools also last longer because they don’t have a motor with a limited life.  They receive their power from the larger motor of my air compressor.

The other big advantage of not having a motor is they’re easier on the body, especially the arms.  The reason is they weigh less not having a motor.  This makes a serious difference especially if it’s a detailed job that is going to take a while to complete.  I think we’ve all experienced arm and neck pain after using a tool that didn’t seem to be that heavy a few hours ago.

Pneumatic air tools don’t have a small motor like the corded and uncorded tools.  This means that they’re running off of the large motor from the compressor.  The obvious advantage here is that instead of having very little power from a small motor, your small light air tools have more torque and big time RPM’s compared to electric tools.

If you’re having to change tools while doing a project it’s a breeze with air compressor couplings.  Another benefit is being able to inflate items around the house.  If you have kids, you can see how this can make you an instant hero.

A portable air compressor can help make a project in the garage or shop much easier and definitely more enjoyable.  If you’re handy and a do it yourselfer, you may know a lot about air compressors but I’ve got some pretty good information that you may not be aware of when you’re using your compressor.

An air compressor is really pretty simple.  When the motor is turned on they turn up the pressure which is caused basically by the high pressure tank.  You simply attach your tool to the hose and run whatever tool you need to use.  There are many air tools that will run off of your compressor.

Basic care and maintenance of your compressor will make it run better and extend its useful life.  You can buy air compressors that don’t require oil but I never recommend them.  They don’t provide as much power and have a shorter lifespan.  Changing the oil is critical as is making sure that the oil level is correct.  Don’t forget to put a little lubricating oil in the hose couplings and in the tools you’re using with the compressor.

Something that many people don’t think about is running their air compressor on a surface that isn’t flat.  When you run your compressor and it’s angled, the oil doesn’t circulate as well to all of the moving parts.  Running your machine in this way will not normally burn it out but again it will shorten its useful life.

If you’re looking at buying a compressor, they come in many different types and styles to fit your needs.  Unless you’re using it on the job, you probably don’t need a large heavy duty unit.  The lighter portable air compressors can easily be moved around the shop or garage or transported in the back of the pickup.  Be sure to tie it down with a bungee or some other type of restraint.

The smaller units can run many tools that you often use in the workshop such as nailers and sanders.  However if you plan on using it to run larger pneumatic tools or paint sprayers, you should check out the larger air compressors.  Price will increase as you increase the gallon capacity and RPMs however.
